“A massive match”
After two really tense matches between Viborg HK and Győr, the Danes won the Champions League title of 2009. Read what players and coaches of the Danish champion and the Hungarian opponent Győri Audi ETO said after the second leg in Veszprém won by Viborg 26:23.
Viborg pivot Anja Althaus: “This was a massive match with an atmosphere I’ve never experienced before. The spectators were great, the match was great and we won the title. My dream came true, but it was hard work. After I received my red card seven minutes before the end, I stood near the tribune and sometimes I couldn’t look at the court. I think we deserved this title as we were the better team at the second leg. This is the greatest moment in my whole career!”
Viborg right back Grit Jurack: “I won the CL title in 2006 and now again. It’s a great feeling to gain this big trophy. I’ve never experienced such a crowd. Győr played really well and even as were leading by six goals they never gave up. As we were punished by a lot of penalties and suspension in the final stage of the match, it was real close. I think we played a perfect season up to now – and from next weekend on we’re going to become Danish champion again.”
Jurack on winning the top scorer’s crown of the Champions League: “It’s nice to be the top scorer, I take this title with the other title, but for me it’s much more important that we became champions again.”
Győr coach Csaba Konkoly: “We were well prepared on the counter attacks of Viborg, but our problem were the missed chances like the missed penalties – and Viborg goalkeeper Katrin Lunde Haraldsen showed a great performance. When it looked as if the match was decided in the middle of the second half, we came back real close, and I’m very proud of the fighting spirit of my team. But I’m disappointed about the chances we missed.”
Győr goalkeeper Katalin Pálinger: “We had a lot of problems such as injuries at the start of the season. But then we improved and we well-deserved a place in the Final. Similarly to our coach, I’m also proud of my team. We could leave the court with heads up high, even as we lost. I knew before he start of this match that Viborg will be well prepared, better than last week.”
Viborg coach Jacob Vestergaard: “It was a fantastic match with fantastic spectators and a great atmosphere. Györ again was a top class opponent, and right before the match everything was possible for both teams. I’m very glad that we could improve our performance in contrast to the first match – and finally I’m very satisfied with the CL title.”
Henriette Mikkelsen, Viborg wing player: “I’m totally glad that we managed to turn the page after a very weak first match. Now we played better, so we can be very satisfied with the title.”
Kristine Lunde, Viborg back court player: “Everything went right today, even as Györ came very close. So we’re totally happy with this title.”
