Löwen remain unbeaten with a home victory against Polish Plock.

Brilliant CL start

A great step towards the main round: Rhein Neckar Löwen took a clear and easy victory against the Polish champion Wisla Plock in their first ever home match in the Champions League.

Though Löwen did not start the game smoothly, the final result was very clear: 38:25 (20:14).

RNL unbeaten“We played too hectic in the very beginning,” coach Wolfgang Schwenke said. “But in the second half we found our rhythm. In the end it was a fantastic home start in the Champions League. I think we’re on the right track.”

Löwen’s most prolific player was the Icelandic international, Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson, with ten goals. Matysik hit the net seven times for Plock.

Especially for the four Polish players of Löwen, it was an extraordinary match:

“It’s always very special to play against a club from your country,” Grzegorz Tkaczyk said. “We’re absolutely satisfied with the result and we have shown the big potential we have in our team. We’re still unbeaten in the Champions League and this means that we made a brilliant start in the competition.”

The team found the rhythm of the game after 15 minutes against Plock. It was Sigurdsson to lead the lions this time, but the Polish goalkeeper Slavomir Szmal was also excellent in the first half.

The Germans played spectacular handball after the break and Plock didn’t have the strength to come closer again.

Despite the first three successful games, line player and assistant coach Christian Schwarzer is not yet satisfied:

“We want to win every match – in the end we count the points and see, what will happen.”
