Casarano fail on the doorstep

For the third consecutive year, Italy will not have a team in the CL. Italgest Casarano didn’t make after missing the target last year. In the previous edition of CL, Austrian Bregenz knocked the Italians out, this year it was the Serbian champion Crvena zvezda.

On both occasions Italgest Casarano should have come back after losing the first away game and on both occasions Casarano had the result in hand during the game (last year they were leading at the half time against Bregenz by 16:8, after losing the first match 36:29).

Against Crvena zvezda the team of Francesko Trapani were leading by 22:14, but didn’t keep the pressure till the end.

There is a big disappointment in the Italian team, but also the awareness about their own qualities, which will be important for the future games in Europe. Casarano will play in the second round of the EHF Cup against Bulgarian Lokomotiv Varna.

“The qualification round for the CL was a crucial moment of the season, and sure we are disappointed for the result. We will analyse the mistakes we made in the second game, but. Anyway, we are happy with the attitude we showed from the beginning of the game in Lecce. One game cannot cancel all the good things we did till now and ruin our future,” said the middle back of Casarano, Piero Di Leo, the best scorer of the game with eight goals.

Apart the games in Europe, Casarano are looking forward to the games in the national Championship. Casarano want to defend both titles they won at home.

“It’s a pity. We improved our game and we proved ourselves in front of our fans against Crvena zvezda. We didn’t make it and the win in the second game will help us for the future matches,” said Francesko Trapani.
