Kasper Nielsen stays with Flensburg

After considering offers from several Danish top clubs, one of Denmark’s strongest defenders, Kasper Nielsen, will stay with SG Flensburg Handewitt for another two years. Nielsen was an important part of the Danish team that won the European Championship.

This means that the strong defender, who is also an efficient and versatile backcourt player, can concentrate on the Bundesliga and on the ‘Group of Death’ in the Champions League. Flensburg are in Group 3 with HSV Hamburg, Portland San Antonio and HC Osiguranja Zagreb. Eurohandball.com talks to the 32-year old former Helsinge and GOG player.

Eurohandball.com: What do you think about the strong opponents?

Kasper Nielsen: Well, let’s put it this way: February and March are going to be extremely interesting, but also very tough with some really difficult matches. I think we have done well against Hamburg this season, while it is going to be really interesting to try ourselves against Portland San Antonio and Zagreb. Anyway it is a tough group, but we will see how far we have got at the end.

Eurohandball.com: Which team will be the toughest?

Kasper Nielsen: I definitely think Hamburg. Portland seem to be somewhat weaker than they used to be, while we have played really good matches against Zagreb away as well as at home in the past. I think we can control them, but Hamburg are doing extremely well at the moment. I expect our matches against them to be really tough challenges.

Eurohandball.com: Do you think your team has a chance to go all the way this year?

Kasper Nielsen: That would be really wonderful. As you know, we the final last year, so it would be really nice to reach the absolute top this year again. Anyway, there are many tough matches ahead of us before we get so far. Let’s talk again when the group stage is over!
